I : How does it feel to be considered the 2nd most likely person to win the entire tournament?

월드챔피언쉽 우승후보 2순위로 꼽히던데 기분이 어떤가요?

S : Wow, I didn’t know that information. But I think I saw during the Summer Championships that people did the same thing and ranked players statistically. Then, I wasn’t very high on the top of the list,  but I also won the championship! I don’t really believe 100 percent in those stats, but I will try very hard to win this tournament.

와 처음 듣는 이야기네요. 하지만 다수의 사람들이 비슷하게 순위를 정한 통계자료에서 저는 높지 않은 순위에 있었음에도 서머 챔피언쉽에서 우승했어요. 그래서 저는 그런 통계들은 믿지 않아요, 다만 우승하기 위해 최선을 다 할 거예요.

I : Now that you are away the community thinks highly of you, is there added pressure to perform?

월챔을위해 출국한 지금, 커뮤니티에서 서렌더 선수에게 거는 기대가 큰데, 이러한 관심들이 플레이에있어서 어느정도 부담이 되나요?

S : It definitely is some added pressure and, on top of that, I guess a lot of Korean viewers and followers tell me that they chose me as their champion. It’s very encouraging but, on the other hand, there is that added pressure to do my best.

확실히 어느 정도 부담감이 더 드는 거 같아요. 게다가 많은 한국의 시청자들과 팔로워들이 챔피언으로 저를 뽑았다고 말씀해주시는데 그런 것들은 저에게 응원이 되기도 하지만 또 한편으로는 최선의 플레이를 하는데 있어서 부담이 되기도 해요.

I : It’s no secret that fans of Korea are very supportive of you, but have you heard anything from the international fans? If so what do you think about it?

한국팬들이 서렌더선수를 응원할거라는건 당연하지만, 다른 전세계의 팬으로부터 응원의 말을 들은적있나요? 만약 그렇다면 그것에대해 어떻게 생각하나요?

S : I’m quite active on my Twitter account and I have seen a lot of direct messages from people I don’t even know! They message me talking about previous games and saying I am talented. It is very encouraging to get this global encouragement.

저는 트위터활동을 꽤 열심히 하고있고 제가 알지못하는 여러 사람들에게서 온 DM을 받아왔어요. 그들은 지난경기에 대해 말하고 저에게 재능이 있다고 말해줘요. 이런 세계적인 응원은 저에게 큰 도움이 되요.

I : What do you recommend to players in Latin America who want to become pro players?

프로가 되고싶어하는 라틴 아메리카 선수들에게 조언을 해주자면?

S : What I really want to recommend for the pro players and prospective pro players, if they are serious about wanting to become a pro player, is that it is important to ladder grind: getting the points so that they have opportunities to participate in playoffs and championships.

Once you start ladder grinding more and more, the people who are doing the same thing start recognizing you. You start to build that community. You have to be very patient and take it step by step. When you have an opportunity,  you grab it!

진지하게 임하려는 프로 선수들이나 프로 지향이신 분들에게 제가 매우 강조하고싶은것은 등급전에서 성적을 내는거에요.
포인트를 따서 플레이 오프나 챔피언쉽에 참가할 수있는 기회를 얻어야해요.

한번 등급전에서 더더욱 높은 등수를 얻고 나면, 같은 행동을하는 사람들이 당신을 인지하기 시작할거에요. 플레이어 사이의  커뮤니티를 쌓기 시작한거죠 . 매우 참을성있게 차근차근 나아가야해요, 그리고 기회가 왔을때 그 것을 잡으시면 됩니다.

I : What has been the hardest adjustment getting used to Kobolds and Catacombs?

코볼트와 지하미궁에 적응하는데 있어 가장 큰 어려움은 무엇이었나요?

S : Preparing myself for the World Championships, because Kobolds and Catacombs launched and I only had about a month to prepare my decks. As you know Priest and warlocks are given decks and the majority of players choose this, me as well.
Personally, I’m very confident with Rogue and I've won with it a lot as well. It’s my third choice. The
hardest part has been choosing my last deck.

월챔을 준비하는 동안 코볼트와 지하미궁이 출시되었고 저에겐 덱을 준비할 시간이이 한 달 밖에 없었어요. 모두가 아는 것처럼 사제와 흑마법사는 괜찮은 덱을 받았고, 다수의 선수들이 그 것을 골라왔어요, 저도 그렇고요.

개인적으로, 저는 제 도적덱에 매우 자신이 있어요, 그걸로 많이 이기기도 했고요. 그래서 도적이 제 세 번째 픽이에요. 

가장 어려웠던 것은 마지막 덱을 고르는 일이었죠.

I : When you streamed before the tournament, was any of it public preparation for the tournament, or did you have to hide your strategies? 

토너먼트 이전에 스트리밍을 할 때,  그냥 공공연 하게 준비한건가요? 아니면 숨겨둔 서렌더 선수만의 전략이 있나요?

S : I noticed that there were a lot of pro players visiting my stream to see my broadcast, so actually, because of that, I could not show my decks. I took a week or two to not stream during the deck submission period. I did limited broadcasting then.

저는 많은 프로들이 제 방송을 보기위해 찾아온다는 것을 알고 있었어요. 실제로 그 것 때문에 제 덱을 보여줄 수 없었어요.  덱 제출기간인 1~2주간 방송을 하지않았고 그때 방송을 제한했어요.

I : What is your favorite mechanic from Kobolds and Catacombs

코볼트와 지하미궁에서 마음에 드는 메커니즘이 무엇인가요.

S : I don’t know if we can call this a mechanic, but what I really enjoyed doing this expansion is Warlock and Cubelock. Carnivorous Cube is a really interesting card because you can use it to be defensive with a taunt minion, or use the cube with Doomguard and be very aggressive. I have had a lot of fun playing this deck.

이 것을 메카니즘이라고 불러야 할지 모르겠지만 저는 흑마와 큐브흑마의 확장성이 매우 재밌었어요.

육식 보물상자는 매우 흥미로운 카드에요, 도발 하수인과함게 수비적으로 사용 할 수도있고 둠가드와 함께 매우 공격적으로도 사용할 수 있기 때문이에요. 저는 이 덱으로 플레이하는게 엄청 재미 있었어요.

I : What is your hardest type of opponent?

가장 상대하기 까다로운 유형의 상대는 무엇인가요?

S : For me, ever since a long time ago, I have been participating in different type of tournaments. The greatest difficulty is players who are aggressive. They bring an aggro deck and even their playstyle is very aggressive. When this happens I tend to start playing more defensive and not play my type of game. That is when I don’t show my full potential.

Prime example of these players is my teammate Xixo and Orange from last championship.

저는 오래전 부터 다양한 종류의 대회들에 참여해왔어요. 저에게 있어 가장큰 어려움은 공격적으로 플레이하는 선수에요. 그들은 어그로덱을 가져오고 심지어 그들의 플레이 스타일도 매우 공격적이에요. 이러한 일이 일어났을때 저는 더욱 수비적 으로 플레이하기 시작하려는 경향이 있고 제 스타일의 경기를 하지 못해요. 그럴 때는 제 능력을 전부 보여줄 수 가 없어요.

대표적인 플레이어로는 제 팀메이트인 Xixo와 지난 챔피언쉽의 Orange가 있어요

I : What is “your game” or your style like?

"서렌더의 게임" 혹은 서렌더 스타일이란 무엇인가요?

S : I am pretty much confident in what decks are available and I can play well with them. But my style is very similar to aggressive players. Getting them play defensively because I am very aggressive. That is the playstyle I am most comfortable with.

저는 어떤덱이든 자신이있고 그걸로 잘 해낼 자신이 있어요. 그렇지만 제 스타일은 공격적인 플레이어에 가깝다고 생각해요. 매우 공격적으로 플레이 해서 상대방에 수비적으로 하게 하는거죠. 그게 제가 가장 편하다고 여기는 플레이 스타일이에요.

"What I normally do is listen to music. When I practice a lot, I actually eat a lot of sugar!

보통 음악을 듣고, 연습을 많이 할때는 당분을 많이 섭취해요.

I : How do you keep from shifting into this defensive play and losing your style when you meet an aggressive player?

서렌더선수는 공격적인 선수를 만났을때 어떻게 하면 방어적으로 플레이 하지않으면서 스타일을 잃지 않을 수 있나요?

S : Basically, when I meet an aggressive opponent and I play very defensive, I actually focus on killing the minions-- I guess it’s when I start feeling like i’m losing. I get into this defensive mode by trying to survive, not by attacking, but by leveling the minion playing field.

일반적으로 공격적인 상대를 만나면 저는 매우 수비적으로 플레이해요, 실제로 하수인을 정리하는데 집중하죠 -- 아마도 그 때가 제가 지고있다고 느끼기 시작할 때 일거에요.  살기 위해서 수비적인 형태를 취해요 공격하는게 아니라 필드의 미니언을 정리하기 위해서요.

I : How do you keep calm when playing in such a high stakes environment against professional players?

그렇게 큰 판돈이 걸려있는 상황에서 프로선수들을 상대로 어떻게하면 그렇게 침착을 유지 할 수 있는 건가요?

S : For this tournament in Amsterdam, I love the city and also my friends are here. There is very limited stress and I am actually enjoying myself a lot.

But the last tournament, the summer Championships in California, that was so different. I wasn’t 100 percent happy with my deck submission and during that tournament, I would be in the player area the entire day and just grind the non-favorable matches again and again just to be sure and pysche myself up for it. 

Other than that, what I normally do is listen to music and when I practice a lot, I actually eat a lot of sugar!

토너먼트가 열리는 이곳 암스테르담, 저는 이 도시가 매우 좋고 또 제 친구들이 여기있어요. 이곳은 스트레스 받을일이 매우 제한적이고 저는 저 스스로 매우 즐기고있어요.

하지만 지난 토너먼트, 캘리포니아에서 열린  서머 챔피언쉽에서는 매우 달랐어요, 저는 덱제출과 대회 동안 100퍼센트 행복하지 못했어요. 저는 선수구역에서 하루 종일 있어야만 했고 좋아하지도 않는 매치를 단순히 반복하고 반복하면서 스스로를 소모할 뿐이었어요.

그 이외에는 보통 음악을듣고, 연습을 많이할때는 당분을 많이 섭취해요.

I : Considering aggressive play is your favorite style, what is your favorite class? Has it always been the traditionally aggressive classes, or have you tied play defensive classes like priest aggressively?

공격적인 스타일이 선호하는 스타일이라고 여긴다면, 가장 선호하는 직업은 무엇인가요? 전통적으로 공격적이었던 직업인가요? 아니면 사제같은 수비적인 직업을 공격적으로 하는것을 선호하나요?

S : Honestly, before highlander priest, I did not consider priest to ever be an aggressive deck. Before highlander, I would not play a lot of priests, but recently, I’ve played it a lot. Hunter has always been my favorite class and I always love playing with him. I have a lot of wins with Hunter!

사실 하이랜더 사제 이전에는 사제를 공격적인 직업이라고 생각해본적이 없어요. 그래서 그렇게 많이 플레이하지는 않았어요. 그러나 최근에는 무척 많이 플레이해요. 사냥꾼은 언제나 제가 가장 좋아하는 직업이에요, 저는 사냥꾼으로 플레이하는게 좋아요. 샤냥꾼으로 정말 많이 이겼어요!

I : What are your thoughts on to why South Korean hasn’t seen a major win on the world stage?

한국이 세계적인 무대에서 우승하지못한 이유가 무엇이라고 생각하세요?

S :  I guess Hearthstone is a little different when compared to other esports. South Korea is a very big place for esports, but for other games apart from HS, the majority of a players income is through tournaments and prize pool

But with Hearthstone it’s a little different. Once you become popular you actually make a very stable income just by streaming. A lot of good pro players tend to side with being a pro streamer instead of relying on little tournament prize pools, which for Hearthstone it is less stable than streaming.

Also, With Hearthstone in Korea, there are not yet a lot of opportunities for pro teams to excel.

제 생각에  하스스톤은 다른 E-스포츠와 비교했을 때 약간 다른거같아요. 한국은 E-스포츠 강국이지만 하스스톤이 아닌 다른 게임의 플레이어들 대부분은 토너먼트나 상금을 통해 수익을 얻어요.

하지만 하스스톤에서는 조금 달라요, 한번 유명해지면 스트리밍을 통해서 안정적인 수입을 유지 할 수 있어요. 그래서 다수의 좋은 플레이어들이 스트리밍보다 보다 불안정한 토너먼트의 작은 상금의 의지하는 것 보다 프로 스트리머로 활동 하려해요.

또한 한국의 하스스톤씬에서는 많은 프로팀들이 돋보일 기회가 아직은 많지 않아요.

I : Is there any player that brought a deck that you completely disagree with and don’t understand?

완전히 반대하는 덱이나 이해 할 수없는 덱을 가져온 선수가 있나요?

S : So, I think only two key players did not submit a highlander priest and Cube warlock. These two players are Ant and SamuelTsao. I guess, I see their other deck submission and it’s good, but I don’t really understand their full strategy as to why they did not bring the Highlander priest and Cubelock deck.

I was actually wishing I could meet them during my preliminaries but, we will see!

저는 하이랜더 사제와 큐브흑마를 가져오지않은 두명이요. 이 두명은 Ant와 SamuelTsao 에요. 제 생각에 제출한 다른 덱은 좋아요, 근데 하이랜더 사제와 큐브흑마를 가져오지않은 두명의 전략을 이해 할 수 없어요.
